Woodgate Community Events hosts the official Australia Day activities in partnership with Bundaberg Regional Council including acknowledging individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to our community.
Congratulations this year to Community Group of the Year – Woodgate Men’s Shed – and our Citizen of Year, this time local couple Harry and Eleanor Zawacki.
Harry and Eleanor are true examples of community kindness. From fundraising, working bees, helping residents move house, cooking meals and gardening, Harry and Eleanor are always on hand, going quietly about offering a hand to those in need. Harry is also known for his regular contribution to weather updates and poems for local ABC radio.
The Community Group of the year was awarded to the Men’s Shed who provide a safe space for men to get together to share their skills, knowledge and support. They don’t just get on the tools and tell tall stories, the Shed team organise info sessions for local blokes on staying healthy and are a great resource for those in need.
You can find them at local events on the tongs with a sausage sizzle, hosting plants sales and sharing their knowledge whenever you need.
Our thanks to guest speaker Mr Wayne Stanley for an interesting session on the local sugar industry (did you know there was a sugar mill at Goodwood?) and Woodgate’s origins as a holiday camp for local cane farmers. And to Mr Stephen Bennett MP and Councillor Bill Trevor for their ongoing support of the Woodgate Community.
Our gratitude also to the local business community for supporting our raffle fundraiser – what a fantastic bunch!
